Why wait 10 years?

The Return of the Decade Long Absence train:

So, after more than a decade we are starting to see a flurry of artists making a comeback in the music world. Aerosmith released their album “Music from another Dimension” in November 2012, the first since “Just Push Play” back in March 2001, (If you discount “Honkin’ On Bobo which was released in 2004 and featured only one original song by the group,”The Grind”, and all others were cover songs).

Also to this subject, David Bowie is also making his return known by releasing HIS first new single in over a decade, “Where Are We Now?” which is taken from his upcoming album “The Next Day” due for release in March 2013. Apparently he thought he’d surprise his fans by giving them a new song on his birthday (January 8th).

Suede are up next, and have also given us a taster of what’s to come in March this year when they release their new album “BloodSports”, by offering up a sample of new work on their website in the form of “Barriers”. A very old skool Suede track with a very catchy rhythm, and chorus, maintaining the confident cockiness that once was the bands trademark. (Of the three, so far I am way more excited over this album release than the others).

The word from the street though is that there are other acts emerging from the depths of forgotenness. Eve is rumoured to be releasing new material, and Broadway singer Barry Manilow is making a two decade absent comeback, that is if his bronchitis doesn’t stop him from a glorious return.

You have to wonder, why? Why now does everyone want to make their mark? Why after all this time do they think, “hmmm, yeah. Now’s the time guys!” ? Perhaps it was the impending ‘End of the World’ in December there that spurred them on to get one last hit in the world? Maybe they have all run out of cash and are looking to fund that pension of theirs? Or maybe, just maybe, they actually wanted to wait and get it just right, make sure that what they were releasing was worth it?

What ever the reason they had, I for one am glad of it. Being a bit of an old skool guy myself, I was always partial to a bit of Suede now and again, and Bowie’s “Ziggy Stardust” always has a special place in my heart with its inspirational and influential melodies and concepts. As for Aerosmith, well I’m just a rocker at heart really, and having seen the band live back in 1999 at Wembley Stadium playing along with Stereophonics, The Black Crowes, Lenny Kravitz, and 3 Colours Red, they will always be a great rock group to me. Even if some of the time they release ballads instead of great uplifting rock riffs, they will be successful.

With the announcements coming in also of Britain’s own The Stone Roses, and of Blur both headlining festivals, and also releasing new material soon, too, it seems that the time is just right to make your return in the music business.

Maybe by Christmas we’ll have Sir Cliff at number one again, eh?
